FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about the local-only workflow, security guarantees, and technical details.
Does HideMyByte upload my files or passwords?
No. All processing happens entirely in your browser. Your images, payloads, and passwords never leave your device.
Why is PNG the default output path?
PNG is a lossless format. We default to it to ensure your hidden data isn't destroyed by the image compression typical of formats like JPEG.
Will the app pick an algorithm for me automatically?
No. You choose the engine explicitly to maintain full control over the trade-offs between speed, capacity, and stealth.
What happens when the password is wrong?
Extraction will fail with a local error. Since we don't store your passwords, they cannot be recovered if forgotten.
Is the embedded data encrypted?
Yes. Your payload is encrypted using your password before it is hidden inside the cover image.
How does Steganography differ from Cryptography?
Cryptography obscures the content of a message, while steganography hides its very existence. HideMyByte uses both for maximum security.
How does WebAssembly (WASM) help?
WASM allows us to run complex, high-performance algorithms directly in your browser at near-native speeds without external servers.
Can I use this service offline?
Yes. Once the website is loaded, the workbench operates entirely locally. You can embed or extract data without an active internet connection.
Will social media sites strip my hidden data?
Most likely. Social media platforms usually re-compress images, which destroys steganographic data. For reliable results, share the raw files directly.
